Automatic Processing and Automatic Social Behavior01:28

Automatic Processing and Automatic Social Behavior

Automatic processing refers to the cognitive operations that occur without conscious intent or awareness, playing a fundamental role in shaping social cognition and behavior. These processes enable individuals to navigate complex social environments efficiently by relying on mental shortcuts and pre-existing knowledge structures known as schemas. One of the most influential mechanisms underlying automatic processing is priming, which subtly activates mental representations through exposure to...
Psychodynamic Therapy01:29

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapies emphasize the exploration of unconscious processes and early childhood experiences as fundamental contributors to psychological difficulties. These therapies, deeply rooted in Freud's psychoanalytic theory, aim to uncover and resolve unconscious conflicts, granting individuals insights that promote emotional and behavioral healing. Contemporary psychodynamic approaches have evolved, integrating a broader range of influences and methodologies while still valuing the...
Psychosurgery01:30

Psychosurgery

Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.
Historical Development of Psychosurgery
In the 1930s, Portuguese neurologist Antonio Egas Moniz introduced a surgical procedure designed...
Freudian Psychology01:26

Freudian Psychology

Sigmund Freud, an Austrian neurologist born in 1856, significantly influenced psychology through his exploration of the unconscious mind. His interest in patients suffering from hysteria and neurosis — conditions without apparent physical causes — led him to theorize the existence of an unconscious mind, a repository for feelings and urges beyond our awareness. Freud's innovative approach included techniques such as dream analysis, free association, and attention to slips of the tongue to...
Subconsciousness and No Awareness01:15

Subconsciousness and No Awareness

The concept of subconscious awareness refers to the processing of information below the level of conscious thought, which significantly influences both behaviors and decisions. It is also known as waking subconscious awareness. This complex level of cognition operates without the direct awareness of the individual, facilitating rapid and simultaneous handling of multiple information streams.
An illustrative example of subconscious processing is its role in problem-solving. Often, individuals...
Subliminal Perception01:15

Subliminal Perception

Subliminal perception refers to the processing of sensory information that occurs below the level of conscious awareness. Researchers study subliminal perception by presenting a stimulus, such as a word or image, very quickly, typically around 50 milliseconds. This rapid presentation is often followed by another stimulus, such as a pattern of dots or lines, which blocks further mental processing of the initial stimulus. As a result, if participants cannot identify the initial stimulus better...

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Behavioral Therapy

Background:

  • Social phobia is a prevalent anxiety disorder.
  • Cognitive change is a key mechanism in therapy for social phobia.
  • Augmenting therapy with adjunctive techniques can improve outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if preconscious priming of personalized positive cognitions can enhance cognitive change in social phobic patients post-therapy.
  • To determine if this priming technique facilitates goal achievement.
  • To evaluate priming as an augmentation strategy for therapy.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty social phobic patients underwent 12 weeks of group behavioral therapy.
  • Following therapy, patients received 6 weeks of preconscious priming and 6 weeks of a control procedure in a randomized cross-over design.
  • Cognitive changes were measured using the Social Interaction Self Statements Test (SISST).

Main Results:

  • Patients showed improvement after therapy.
  • The priming procedure led to increased positive cognitions and decreased negative cognitions on the SISST.
  • Priming was more effective when administered immediately after group therapy.

Conclusions:

  • Preconscious priming of positive cognitions demonstrated an effect on social phobia-related cognitions.
  • The priming technique was effective in the expected direction.
  • This self-administered method can serve as a valuable augmentation strategy to therapy.
