Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Gallstones (cholecystolithiasis) are increasingly diagnosed in children.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the standard surgical approach for symptomatic gallstones.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstones in a pediatric population.
  • To assess the incidence and management of postoperative complications, particularly those related to bile drainage.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 95 children (age 6-18 years) who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstones between 2002-2010.
  • Review of surgical outcomes, including conversion rates and postoperative complications.

Main Results:

  • Symptomatic cholecystolithiasis was the primary indication for surgery in most cases.

Laparoscopic Choledochal Cyst Excision and Roux-en-Y Choledochojejunostomy in Adults

Published on: February 28, 2025

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was successful in all 95 patients, with only three requiring conversion to open surgery.
  • Three patients experienced postoperative complications related to bile drainage, which were successfully managed with restored drainage or temporary biliary stents.
  • Conclusions:

    • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a highly effective and safe treatment for pediatric gallstones.
    • Careful attention to bile drainage is crucial for minimizing postoperative complications in pediatric cholecystectomy.
