Argument for esophageal cancer screening in high risk U.S. populations
1University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville 32610.
Abstract:
Because cancer of the esophagus is usually recognized late in its course, treatment is often ineffective. Detection at an early stage has been associated with a more favorable prognosis. Occult blood bead detection and balloon-mesh cytology are reviewed for their effectiveness in mass screening. Screening high prevalence populations by one of these methods may help to lower the high mortality of the disease.
