Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Reconstructive Surgery
  • Aesthetic Surgery

Background:

  • Abdominoplasty revision may be required to address contour irregularities, asymmetries, umbilical issues, or scar quality.
  • A patient presented with a high, unattractive scar and elevated pubic hairline following an abdominoplasty performed internationally.

Observation:

  • The patient underwent a staged reconstructive procedure 2 years after the initial abdominoplasty.
  • The initial surgery involved hernia repair, umbilical repositioning, and placement of a tissue expander.
  • Over 4 months, 3.5 liters of expansion were achieved via the tissue expander.

Findings:

  • A secondary surgery removed the tissue expander and successfully lowered and improved the abdominal scar.
  • The patient experienced uneventful healing post-revision surgery.
  • The reconstructive effort resulted in a satisfactory aesthetic outcome for the patient.

Implications:

  • Tissue expansion is a viable technique for correcting significant scarring and contour deformities after abdominoplasty.
  • Staged reconstructive approaches can effectively manage complex postoperative complications.
  • Successful revision abdominoplasty can significantly improve patient satisfaction and quality of life.
