Interdisciplinary Care: The Health Care Team-I

An interdisciplinary team includes many healthcare professionals working together and utilizing their skills, knowledge, and expertise to provide holistic and quality patient care.
Physicians
The physician's primary responsibility is to diagnose illness and direct the medical or surgical treatment of the condition. The authority to admit patients to a healthcare agency or institution and practice care within that setting is granted to physicians by the healthcare agency or institution itself.
Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Nursing Interventions II: Selecting and Classifying the Nursing Interventions

Creating and executing a nursing diagnosis helps nurses plan care and guide patient, family, and community interventions. They are developed based on a patient's physical evaluation and support measuring the outcomes. It is not recommended to select random interventions throughout the planning process. Instead, consider the following six essential factors when choosing interventions:
Nursing Implementation01:15

Nursing Implementation

Implementation is the execution of the nursing care plan developed during the planning phase.
The five steps to implementing effective nursing care include reassessing the patient, reviewing and revising the existing nursing care plan, organizing the resources and care delivery, anticipating and preventing complications, and implementing nursing interventions.
Nursing Interventions I: Taxonomy of Nursing Interventions01:03

Nursing Interventions I: Taxonomy of Nursing Interventions

Nursing interventions are chosen as part of the planning process to achieve patient outcomes. Once nursing diagnoses are determined, the goals and outcomes are specified, then the nursing interventions are selected and individualized according to the patient's situation.
A nursing intervention is a treatment or action based on scientific concepts and knowledge from the nursing, behavioral, and physical sciences. Identifying and prioritizing nursing interventions based on the desired outcome is...
Planning Nursing Care I01:21

Planning Nursing Care I

The planning phase of the nursing process helps nurses set priorities, outline patient-centered goals and expected outcomes, and tailor nursing interventions to align with the aligned care plan. Through the planning phase, the nurse applies critical thinking skills to align and develop interventions according to the patient's needs. It provides continuity of care allowing patients to receive the maximum benefit from treatment. It serves as a pilot plan for allocating individual staff to a...

Summary

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Psychiatric Bridging Intervention improved attendance for initial psychiatric evaluations (IPE) for depression patients. This intervention also reduced the length of IPE appointments.

Related Experiment Videos

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatric Nursing
  • Mental Health Services Research
  • Healthcare Innovation

Background:

  • Depression is common, treatable, but long waits for care decrease treatment adherence.
  • High rates of failure to attend initial psychiatric evaluations (IPE) are linked to lengthy treatment delays.
  • Evidence-based interventions are needed to improve access and engagement in mental healthcare.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the development, implementation, and pilot evaluation of an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Psychiatric Bridging Intervention.
  • To assess the intervention's impact on IPE appointment attendance rates.
  • To explore potential efficiencies in psychiatric appointment duration.

Main Methods:

  • Grounded in Peplau's theory and Roger's Diffusion of Innovations framework.
  • A pilot study compared standard care (n=38) with the APN intervention (n=19) for clients with depressive symptoms.
  • Intervention involved supportive psychoeducational counseling and psychotropic medication initiation.

Main Results:

  • The APN intervention showed a trend towards improved IPE attendance (p = 0.08).
  • Intervention clients required significantly shorter IPE appointments (30 minutes) versus standard care (60 minutes).
  • This pilot suggests the intervention's potential to enhance patient engagement and streamline psychiatric services.

Conclusions:

  • The APN Psychiatric Bridging Intervention shows promise in addressing barriers to timely mental healthcare.
  • The intervention may improve patient attendance and reduce the duration of initial psychiatric evaluations.
  • Further research is warranted to confirm these findings and optimize implementation.
