Summary
Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare. This study details the first reported case of an SFT originating in the masseter muscle within the head and neck region.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Pathology
Background:
- Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are uncommon neoplasms typically originating in the pleura.
- SFTs have been documented in diverse head and neck locations, including the oral cavity, nasal passages, sinuses, salivary glands, thyroid, buccal space, and larynx.
Observation:
- This report describes a rare case of SFT in a 27-year-old woman, specifically originating within the masseter muscle.
- This represents the first documented instance of a head and neck SFT arising in this anatomical site.
Findings:
- The study presents comprehensive clinical, radiological, and histopathological findings.
- Immunoreactivity patterns of the tumor are also detailed.
Implications:
- This case expands the known anatomical distribution of solitary fibrous tumors within the head and neck.
- Understanding SFTs in unusual locations like the masseter muscle is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management.
