Area of Science:

  • Environmental Science
  • Ecotoxicology
  • Water Resource Management

Background:

  • Transitional waters like estuaries and lagoons face significant sediment contamination from diverse sources.
  • Existing methods for assessing and managing sediment contamination in these vital ecosystems are less developed than for marine or freshwater environments.
  • The unique ecological characteristics of transitional waters, including variable salinity, necessitate specialized assessment and management approaches.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To update and expand a previous review of sediment contamination assessment methods for estuaries.
  • To cover all transitional waters, incorporating integrative assessments and management decision-making.
  • To provide a comprehensive overview of current and emerging strategies for addressing sediment contamination in these sensitive ecosystems.

Main Methods:

  • Review of chemical assessment techniques for sediment contaminants.
  • Evaluation of bioindicators and biomarkers for ecological impact assessment.
  • Analysis of biological survey methodologies in transitional environments.
  • Integration of assessment findings into management decision-making frameworks.

Main Results:

  • Sediment contamination is a pervasive global issue in transitional waters.
  • A range of chemical, biological, and integrative methods are available for assessment.
  • Effective management requires a focus on ecosystem services and proactive strategies.
  • Current approaches need refinement to address the unique challenges of transitional waters.

Conclusions:

  • Updated and comprehensive methods are crucial for assessing and managing sediment contamination in transitional waters.
  • Integrative assessments combining chemical and biological data are recommended.
  • Proactive, ecosystem service-focused management strategies are more effective than reactive ones.
  • Continued research and development are needed to refine assessment and management practices for these valuable ecosystems.
