Background:

  • Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is defined by the Philadelphia chromosome and BCR-ABL fusion gene.
  • Tyrosine kinase inhibitors have revolutionized CML patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To monitor the M-BCR-ABL transcript level in CML patients.
  • To assess the correlation between M-BCR-ABL expression and clinical course.

Main Methods:

  • Real-time quantitative PCR was used to measure M-BCR-ABL transcript levels.
  • 15 CML patients were studied between April 2008 and July 2012.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant correlation (p=0.013) was found between M-BCR-ABL expression levels and the clinical course of CML patients.
  • This indicates the clinical relevance of monitoring transcript levels.

Conclusions:

  • Molecular biology techniques, specifically monitoring M-BCR-ABL transcript levels, play a vital role in CML patient management.
  • Regular molecular analysis is recommended for effective CML patient monitoring.
