Urinary tract catheterization is crucial for ferrets with urethral obstructions, often caused by enlarged prostates or stones. Prompt intervention is vital to relieve blockages and ensure ferret health.

Background:

  • Urinary tract catheterization is a common procedure in veterinary medicine.
  • Urethral obstruction is a critical condition in male ferrets.

Observation:

  • Ferrets, particularly neutered males, frequently require urinary tract catheterization due to urethral obstruction.
  • The primary causes include prostatic enlargement linked to adrenal tumors and, less frequently, urolithiasis.

Findings:

  • Prostatic enlargement, often hormonally induced by adrenal tumors, is the leading cause of urethral obstruction in male ferrets.
  • Urolithiasis is an identified, though less common, cause of obstruction.

Implications:

  • Immediate intervention for urethral obstruction is essential for ferret survival.
