Patient satisfaction is highly influenced by personal factors and external care conditions, not perceived care received. This study highlights key predictors for improving patient care quality and satisfaction.

Background:

Understanding patient satisfaction is crucial for healthcare quality improvement.
Predictors of patient satisfaction are complex, involving personal and external factors.
A theoretical model integrating these factors can enhance assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate patient perceptions of care quality and satisfaction.
To identify predictors of patient satisfaction, including personal conditions, external care conditions, and perceived care received (PR).
To test these predictors against a theoretical model.

Main Methods:

Cross-sectional study design involving 528 patients from Norwegian hospitals.
Data collected via a comprehensive questionnaire including validated instruments.
Sequential multiple regression analysis used to assess predictor contributions to emotional stress reaction (ESRQ).

Main Results:

Personal factors explained 51.7% of the variance in emotional stress reaction.
External objective care conditions explained an additional 2.4%.
Perceived care received (PR) did not significantly add to the explanation; patients reported high satisfaction and quality ratings.

Conclusions:

A theoretical model incorporating an emotion-oriented approach significantly explains 54% of patient satisfaction.
Personal and external care conditions are key drivers of patient satisfaction.
The findings offer insights for enhancing patient care quality.
