Renal transplant patients may develop posterior subcapsular cataracts (PSC). These cataracts, termed "recovering" PSC, appear linked to the peritransplant period, not ongoing immunosuppressive therapy.

- Fourteen (25%) patients developed PSC.
- Renal transplant patients with PSC had significantly thicker lenses compared to controls.
- PSC in this cohort was distinguished by superficial cortical opacity, depth proportional to time post-transplant, and a normal anterior clear zone.
Conclusions:
- A unique form of PSC, termed 'recovering' PSC, is identified in renal transplant recipients.
- The cataractogenic insult likely occurs during the peritransplant period.
- Maintenance immunosuppressive therapy or steroids are probably not the primary cause of this type of cataract.
