Summary

Crutch use after hip arthroscopy is not strictly necessary. Patients can fully weight bear if comfortable, showing similar outcomes to those using crutches for four weeks.

  • Group 1 (n=85) followed a 4-week partial weight-bearing protocol on crutches.
  • Group 2 (n=80) was permitted immediate full weight-bearing if comfortable, with outcomes assessed using the modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS) at 6 weeks and 6 months.
  • Main Results:

    • Both groups demonstrated significant improvement in mHHS scores from pre-operative levels at 6 weeks and 6 months.
    • The mean duration of crutch use was 28.2 days for Group 1 and 13.4 days for Group 2.
    • No statistically significant difference in mHHS scores was observed between the two groups at either follow-up point.

    Conclusions:

    • Enforcing a specific duration of partial weight-bearing on crutches after hip arthroscopy is not supported by current evidence.
    • Allowing patients to progress to full weight-bearing as comfort permits appears safe and effective, irrespective of the specific arthroscopic procedure performed.
    • Future research should focus on developing evidence-based, objective rehabilitation protocols for hip arthroscopy patients.
