Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of educational games on health professionals' performance, knowledge, skills, attitude, and satisfaction.
  • To assess the effect of game-based interventions on patient outcomes in healthcare settings.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive systematic search of multiple databases (MEDLINE, AMED, CINAHL, etc.) was conducted in January 2012.
  • Included studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs), controlled clinical trials (CCTs), controlled before and after (CBA), and interrupted time-series analysis (ITS).
  • Data extraction focused on methodological quality, participants, interventions (educational games), and outcomes including patient results and professional behavior.

Main Results:

  • Two RCTs were included from 2079 unique citations identified.
  • One study using a "Family Feud" style game showed improved knowledge scores in infection control (P = 0.02).
  • Another study comparing a "Snakes and Ladders" game to case-based learning found no significant difference in stroke knowledge but higher enjoyment in the game group.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence neither confirms nor refutes the effectiveness of educational games for health professionals.
  • High-quality research is required to determine the impact of games on patient outcomes and professional performance.
  • Further investigation into game-based learning in healthcare is warranted to fully understand its benefits.
