Impression Management Techniques II: Ingratiation01:29

Impression Management Techniques II: Ingratiation

Ingratiation refers to deliberate behaviors aimed at increasing one’s attractiveness or likability to a target person, often for strategic interpersonal or social gain. This set of impression management tactics is especially prevalent in hierarchical contexts, where influencing someone with greater power or authority can yield significant benefits. Several distinct ingratiation strategies have been identified, each leveraging psychological cues to foster favor and affiliation.Opinion...
Persuasion Strategies01:52

Persuasion Strategies

Researchers have tested many persuasion strategies, including the foot-in-the door and the door-in-the-face techniques, in a variety of contexts. Ultimately, the principles are effective in selling products and changing people’s attitude, ideas, and behaviors (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004).
Routes of Persuasion02:20

Routes of Persuasion

Persuasion is the process of changing our attitude toward something based on some kind of communication. Much of the persuasion we experience comes from outside forces. How do people convince others to change their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors? What communications do you receive that attempt to persuade you to change your attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors?
Understanding Deception01:14

Understanding Deception

Deception is a pervasive aspect of human communication. Empirical studies have shown that most individuals engage in some form of deceit on a daily basis, with approximately 20% of social exchanges involving deceptive elements. Lying follows a developmental trajectory, peaking during adolescence and declining with age, possibly due to the maturation of cognitive control and social accountability.Cognitive and Social Factors in Deception DetectionDespite its prevalence, accurately detecting...
Confirmation Biases01:31

Confirmation Biases

The confirmation bias is the tendency to focus on information that confirms our existing beliefs and ignore information that is inconsistent with our expectations. For example, if you think that your professor is not very nice, you notice all of the instances of rude behavior exhibited by the professor while ignoring the countless pleasant interactions he is involved in on a daily basis. Have you ever fallen prey to the confirmation bias, either as the source or target of such bias?
Impedances and Admittance01:23

Impedances and Admittance

In the realm of AC circuits, passive circuit elements like resistors, inductors, and capacitors take on a different character when characterized by phasor voltage and current. Their behavior is expressed through impedance, a vital concept in AC circuit analysis.
Impedance is a measure of resistance to sinusoidal current flow in an AC circuit. Unlike their behavior in DC circuits, where inductors appear as short circuits and capacitors as open circuits, the behavior of these components in AC...

Summary

Inveiglement is a form of interpersonal control that diverts individuals or groups from their thoughts and perceptions. This study identifies four subtypes and illustrates their impact in group psychotherapy settings.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Social Sciences
  • Organizational Behavior

Background:

  • Interpersonal influence and control are critical in group dynamics.
  • Inveiglement, a specific mode of influence, diverts individuals from existing or potential thoughts.
  • Understanding inveiglement is key to analyzing group, organizational, and political behavior.

Observation:

  • Inveiglement restricts independent thought and behavior by imposing mental boundaries.
  • It can manifest as induced dissociation or an impingement on cognitive capacities.
  • Clinical examples from group psychotherapy illustrate its practical application.

Findings:

  • Four distinct subtypes of inveiglement are identified: toxic, neurotic, communal, and presentational.
  • Each subtype represents a unique mechanism of mental binding and control.

  • The study provides clinical illustrations of these subtypes within group psychotherapy.
  • Implications:

    • Recognizing inveiglement subtypes can enhance understanding of dysfunctional group dynamics.
    • This framework aids in identifying and counteracting undue influence in various settings.
    • Applications extend to clinical psychology, organizational management, and political analysis.
