We present a novel phase stabilization technique for radio-over-fiber links. This method corrects phase fluctuations during downconversion, simplifying remote antenna systems and achieving significant phase compression.
Area of Science:
- Optoelectronics
- Radio-frequency engineering
- Signal processing
Background:
- Radio-over-fiber (ROF) links enable remote signal transfer.
- Maintaining phase stability in ROF systems is challenging.
- Existing phase-locking-loop methods can be complex.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose and demonstrate a new phase stabilization method for ROF links.
- To simplify remote antenna systems by reducing electronic complexity.
- To achieve rapid and endless phase correction.
Main Methods:
- A novel post-correction mixing technique during downconversion at the center station.
- Direct transfer of radio frequency (RF) signals via ROF.
- Experimental demonstration of the proposed scheme.
Main Results:
- Phase fluctuations are corrected after signal transfer, not at the source.
- Achieved a phase fluctuation compression factor of approximately 200.
- Demonstrated a simplified electronic design for remote antenna units.
Conclusions:
- The proposed method effectively stabilizes phase in ROF links.
- This technique offers a simpler and potentially more efficient alternative to existing methods.
- The approach is suitable for applications requiring stable RF signal transfer over long distances.
