Summary

A new automated functional imaging (AFI) method accurately assesses right ventricular (RV) systolic function, correlating well with traditional measures. This technique offers objective RV function assessment without complex analysis.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Echocardiography
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Objective assessment of right ventricular (RV) function remains challenging despite advancements.
  • Traditional echocardiographic measures for RV function have limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a novel speckle tracking method, automated functional imaging (AFI), for assessing RV global systolic function.
  • To compare the novel AFI method with traditional echocardiographic measures.

Main Methods:

  • 125 patients with diverse cardiac conditions were studied.
  • Echocardiographic images were analyzed using conventional manual tracing and GE's automated functional imaging (AFI) for myocardial strain.
  • Standard left and RV systolic function parameters were collected.

Main Results:

  • Global longitudinal RV strain measured by manual tracing correlated with traditional RV systolic performance parameters.
  • Automated functional imaging (AFI) RV peak systolic strain showed strong correlation with tricuspid annular systolic motion and RV outflow tract excursion.
  • A global RV AFI peak systolic strain value of <-17% was identified as abnormal (sensitivity 73%, specificity 91%).

Conclusions:

  • The automated AFI method enables simultaneous, angle-independent quantitation of global and regional RV function.
  • This novel method correlates with standard RV performance measures.
  • It eliminates the need for additional measurements, complex calculations, or extensive offline analysis.
