Summary

Serum osteocalcin, alkaline phosphatase, and urinary hydroxyproline were evaluated in cancer patients. Osteocalcin showed limited usefulness in investigating neoplastic conditions, with other markers being more sensitive.

  • Bone metastases and humoral malignant hypercalcemia (HMH) are serious complications of cancer.
  • Biochemical markers are used to assess bone turnover and disease activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the utility of serum osteocalcin, alkaline phosphatase, and urinary hydroxyproline in patients with various bone metastases, HMH, and myeloma.
  • To compare the sensitivity of these markers in different neoplastic conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Measurement of serum osteocalcin and alkaline phosphatase levels.
  • Quantification of urinary hydroxyproline excretion.
  • Analysis of marker levels in patients with blastic, lithic, or mixed metastases, HMH, and myeloma.

  • Osteocalcin showed limited significant increase in metastases, with alkaline phosphatase and hydroxyproline being more sensitive.
