  • Cerebral CT scans are often used to evaluate traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in infants, but their utility and risks require careful consideration.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of nonwalking infants admitted after home falls.
  • To identify factors associated with skull fractures and TBI in this vulnerable population.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study included 1910 infants aged 9 months or younger admitted after a home fall between 2007 and 2011.
  • Data collected included demographics, fall circumstances, injury details, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores, CT scan results, and outcomes.
  • Statistical analyses, including univariate and multivariate models, were used to identify risk factors for TBI.

  • Identifying high-risk infants based on predisposing factors and circumstances is essential for justifying neuroimaging in the absence of validated predictive scores.
