Summary

Improvements in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) reduced non-relapse mortality (NRM) in acute leukemia patients not in remission. Reductions in graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and infection-related deaths were key factors.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze trends in non-relapse mortality (NRM) and causes of death after allo-HCT in acute leukemia patients not in remission.
  • To evaluate the impact of evolving transplant modalities on allo-HCT outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of a nationwide transplant registry database covering 3308 acute leukemia patients in non-remission.
  • Comparison of NRM incidence and causes across three consecutive four-year periods (1997-2008).

Main Results:

  • A significant decrease in NRM was observed in the 2005-2008 period compared to 1997-2000 (HR 0.65).
  • Overall mortality also significantly decreased in 2005-2008 (HR 0.85).
