Summary

This study expands the neural understanding of motivation by investigating intrinsic motivation using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Findings show distinct brain regions, insular cortex and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), are activated by intrinsic versus extrinsic motivations.
