The association between low vitamin D and depressive disorders

Low vitamin D levels (hypovitaminosis D) are linked to depression severity and risk. This finding suggests vitamin D deficiency may be a biological vulnerability for depressive disorders.

- Lower 25(OH)D levels were inversely associated with depression symptom severity and predicted a reduced risk of depressive disorders at 2-year follow-up.

- Low serum 25(OH)D levels are associated with the presence and severity of depressive disorders.
- Hypovitaminosis D may indicate an underlying biological vulnerability for depression.
- Further research is needed to determine if treating hypovitaminosis D can be a cost-effective intervention for depression.
