The size of an exogenous cue influences where attention is directed, affecting how visual information is processed. This study shows cue size matters for attentional effects, especially in different visual tasks.

  • Participants performed a dual task involving motion discrimination in random-dot kinematograms (RDKs) and red dot localization.
  • Uninformative precues were either large or small luminance-change frames.
  • Attentional effects were measured by performance changes in both tasks.

  • Motion discrimination showed attentional effects for both large and small cues.
  • Red dot localization showed attentional effects only for small cues, not large ones.
  • Further experiments ruled out reduced spatial uncertainty or surround suppression as explanations.
