The Professional Nurse01:22

The Professional Nurse

Professional nurses are not limited to bedside care and are taking roles of greater responsibility. A nurse should have a knowledge-based practice, including personal, theoretical, procedural, cultural, and reflexive knowledge. Additionally, nurses must be competent in cognitive, technical, interpersonal, and ethical/legal skills. Some of the best attributes of successful nurses include the following:
Communication skills: These are critical characteristics, especially speaking and listening.
Obedience01:08

Obedience

According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation, obedience...

Applications of GIS: Disaster Management and Emergency Response

Geographic Information System (GIS) technology is essential for risk identification, action prioritization, and resource optimization in critical situations like flooding and earthquakes. By integrating spatial and demographic data, GIS provides a comprehensive framework for emergency response.GIS integrates data layers, like rainfall intensity, topography, elevation profiles, and river levels, to model high-risk flood zones. These layers assess areas susceptible to flooding based on their...
Planning Nursing Care I01:21

Planning Nursing Care I

The planning phase of the nursing process helps nurses set priorities, outline patient-centered goals and expected outcomes, and tailor nursing interventions to align with the aligned care plan. Through the planning phase, the nurse applies critical thinking skills to align and develop interventions according to the patient's needs. It provides continuity of care allowing patients to receive the maximum benefit from treatment. It serves as a pilot plan for allocating individual staff to a...

Accountability and Responsibility of a Nurse II

Professional accountability in nursing is a multifaceted concept that encompasses professional ethics, legal standards, and employment expectations. This framework ensures that nurses maintain and elevate the quality of care while upholding the values of their profession. It compels them to treat patients, families, and colleagues with respect, compassion, and integrity.
For example, a nurse demonstrating respect and compassion might listen attentively to a patient's concerns, provide comfort...

Area of Science:

  • Disaster nursing
  • Healthcare preparedness
  • Rural health

Background:

  • Natural and human-induced disasters are increasing globally.
  • Healthcare providers, especially nurses, play a vital role in disaster mitigation and recovery.
  • Limited research exists on nurses' disaster preparedness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze rural nurses' perceived readiness to manage disaster situations.
  • To identify factors influencing nurses' confidence in disaster response.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive analysis was conducted using the 58-item Disaster Readiness Questionnaire.
  • 620 hospital-based nurses from rural Texas communities were surveyed in summer 2011 via email.
  • Data collection utilized hospital intranet links for survey distribution.

Main Results:

  • Most nurses reported a lack of confidence in responding to major disaster events.
  • Prior disaster or shelter experience significantly predicted nurse confidence.
  • Self-regulation (motivation) predicted competence in willingness to assume risk, but job satisfaction did not predict preparedness.

Conclusions:

  • Nurses should actively seek disaster-specific education, drills, and event participation.
  • Administrative support is essential for fostering nurses' disaster preparedness.
  • Enhancing nurse readiness is critical for effective community care during disasters.
