Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • An estimated 35% of individuals with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in the Netherlands remain undiagnosed.
  • Many undiagnosed individuals belong to known risk groups and present with symptoms suggestive of HIV infection.
  • Physicians often do not initiate HIV testing despite these indicators during routine consultations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the missed opportunities for early HIV diagnosis in the Netherlands.
  • To introduce a new European guideline recommending HIV testing for specific indicator diseases.
  • To promote earlier recognition and diagnosis of HIV infection.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current HIV diagnostic practices and challenges in the Netherlands.
  • Analysis of a new European guideline that lists indicator diseases for HIV testing.
  • Discussion of the potential impact of guideline implementation on early HIV detection.

Main Results:

  • A significant proportion of HIV-positive individuals in the Netherlands are undiagnosed.
  • Current clinical practice often fails to identify HIV infection despite presenting symptoms.
  • The new European guideline provides a framework for integrating HIV testing into regular diagnostic procedures.

Conclusions:

  • Implementing the new European guideline can significantly improve the early detection of HIV infections.
  • Systematic consideration of indicator diseases in diagnostic pathways is crucial for reducing undiagnosed HIV.
  • Earlier diagnosis of HIV leads to timely treatment and better health outcomes for infected individuals.
