Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP)

Background:

Existing geriatric competencies for allopathic medical students lack osteopathic principles.
A need exists for specialty-specific OPP competencies in geriatrics within the osteopathic profession.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop comprehensive minimum competencies in OPP tailored for osteopathic medical students in geriatric medicine.
To integrate osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) into geriatric education.

Main Methods:

The Delphi technique was adapted, involving osteopathic geriatricians and the Educational Council on Osteopathic Principles (ECOP).
Two rounds of surveys and a breakout session were conducted to achieve expert consensus.
Competencies were retained if ranked "very important" by at least 80% of participants.

Main Results:

Six new minimum competencies in OMM for geriatrics were established through expert consensus.
These competencies focus on OMM for gait/balance, adverse events, pain/end-of-life care, and adapting OMM for elderly patients.
A majority of participants agreed that OPP competencies should include specific OMM techniques for the elderly.

Conclusions:

The Delphi process successfully generated six new OMM competencies for osteopathic medical students in geriatrics.
These consensus-based competencies provide a foundation for medical schools and residency programs to establish educational standards.
The findings aim to improve the care of geriatric patients by osteopathic physicians.
