Lipid Catabolism01:25

Lipid Catabolism

Triglycerides serve as crucial long-term energy storage molecules in microorganisms, providing a dense source of metabolic energy. Their breakdown is mediated by lipases, which hydrolyze triglycerides into glycerol and free fatty acids. Each of these components follows distinct metabolic pathways, ultimately contributing to ATP synthesis and cellular energy homeostasis.Glycerol MetabolismGlycerol, released from triglyceride hydrolysis, is phosphorylated by glycerol kinase to form...

Varicose Veins II: Diagnostic Studies and Interprofessional Care

Varicose veins, or varicosities, develop when the valves in the veins, which control blood flow, weaken or damage. It causes blood to pool and the veins to enlarge. Understanding the clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and management options for varicose veins is crucial for effective treatment and relief.Clinical manifestationsClinical manifestations of varicose veins include a heavy, achy feeling or pain after prolonged standing or sitting. This discomfort can often be relieved by...

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Aesthetic Medicine
  • Regenerative Medicine

Background:

  • Calf augmentation and remodelling are increasingly common surgical procedures.
  • Traditional calf reshaping often involves silicone implants, posing surgical challenges.
  • Lipoinjection (fat grafting) presents a reliable alternative with minimal scarring and lasting results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of liporemodelling for calf reshaping.
  • To assess the aesthetic and functional results of fat grafting in the calf.
  • To determine the safety and patient satisfaction associated with calf liporemodelling.

Main Methods:

  • A series of five patients (three female, two male) underwent bilateral calf liporemodelling between 2009 and 2011.
  • Follow-up ranged from 6 to 18 months, with calf perimeter measurements.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging was utilized in two patients to assess fat graft localization.

Main Results:

  • An average of 126.8±21.2 cc of fat was injected per calf.
  • The average increase in calf perimeter was 2.8 cm.
  • All patients reported good aesthetic outcomes and high satisfaction, with no significant complications.

Conclusions:

  • Calf liporemodelling is a viable and recommended technique for reshaping the lower leg.
  • Fat grafting provides a safe and effective method for calf augmentation.
  • The procedure offers a favorable alternative to traditional calf implants.
