An evolutionarily conserved mutual interdependence between Aire and microRNAs in promiscuous gene expression

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are crucial for central tolerance by regulating promiscuous gene expression (pGE) in thymic epithelial cells (TECs). Their absence impairs the autoimmune regulator (Aire) and affects both Aire-dependent and -independent genes.
