Summary

Several steroid test kits can falsely elevate testosterone levels when patients take danazol. This can lead to misdiagnosis of conditions like virilization. Stopping danazol corrects these false readings and symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Radioimmunoassay (RIA) kits are widely used for measuring steroid hormones.
  • Danazol is a synthetic steroid used to treat conditions like endometriosis and hereditary angioedema.
  • Cross-reactivity in immunoassays can lead to inaccurate results.

Observation:

  • A patient taking danazol presented with signs of virilization.
  • The patient's serum testosterone levels appeared to be 15-fold higher than normal.
  • This elevation was suspected to be a false positive due to danazol interference.

Findings:

  • Specific testosterone radioimmunoassay kits demonstrated significant cross-reactivity with danazol.
  • This cross-reactivity caused falsely elevated serum testosterone measurements.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Discontinuation of danazol led to the resolution of virilization symptoms and normalization of testosterone levels.
  • Implications:

    • Clinicians must be aware of danazol's potential to interfere with steroid hormone assays.
    • False elevations in testosterone can lead to incorrect diagnoses and unnecessary treatments.
    • Careful patient history, including medication use, is crucial for accurate endocrine testing interpretation.
