Calcaneal myxoid chondrosarcoma: a rare case.

Background:

Skeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is an exceptionally rare bone tumor.
It exhibits distinct histological features and a typically indolent growth pattern.

Observation:

A 21-year-old female presented with a two-year history of gradually increasing, seemingly benign swelling in her left foot.
Initial investigations suggested a benign lesion, leading to attempted excision.

Findings:

Intraoperative findings indicated an aggressive lesion, contrary to initial assessments.
Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of skeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma.
Despite initial benign presentation, the tumor demonstrated aggressive behavior, necessitating below-knee amputation.

This case underscores the importance of comprehensive histopathological diagnosis, even with seemingly benign presentations.
Skeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma can have a worse clinical course than typical chondrosarcomas.
