Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate morphological changes in the extracranial carotid arteries of patients with ischemic infarction using ultrasonography.
  • To characterize atherosclerotic plaque in the carotid arteries.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective institutional study with convenience sampling.
  • Inclusion of patients with Computed Tomography-proven ischemic, lacunar, and transient ischemic infarctions.
  • Utilized ultrasonography to examine the extracranial carotid arteries.

Main Results:

  • Fifty-four cases were analyzed.
  • Mean Intima-Media Thickness was 0.89 mm (right) and 0.88 mm (left).
  • 65% of cases showed plaque, predominantly in the carotid bulb region (93%).

  • 53% of plaques were soft, with most causing <50% lumen narrowing.
  • Internal carotid artery plaque found in 24% of cases.

  • Morphological assessment of carotid plaques is feasible with ultrasound.
