Summary

Background:

  • Renal calculi (kidney stones) are a common condition requiring treatment.
  • Lithotripsy is a standard procedure for breaking down kidney stones.
  • Concerns exist regarding potential renal function impairment following lithotripsy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of piezoelectric lithotripsy on renal function.
  • To evaluate changes in effective renal plasma flow and differential renal function post-treatment.
  • To determine if early post-treatment renal function is affected by this lithotripsy method.

Main Methods:

  • 14 patients with renal calculi were treated using the Richard Wolf 2300 piezoelectric lithotriptor.
  • Patients received 3,000 to 4,000 shocks at maximal recommended voltage.

    • The Richard Wolf 2300 piezoelectric lithotriptor appears safe for renal function in the short term.
