Granulocytic sarcoma, a rare breast tumor, can manifest after bone marrow transplantation. This study presents two cases, highlighting its unusual occurrence as a relapse pattern post-transplant.
Area of Science:
- Hematology
- Oncology
- Pathology
Background:
- Granulocytic sarcoma is an extramedullary tumor of immature myeloid cells.
- It is typically associated with acute myeloid leukemia or myelodysplastic syndromes.
- Breast involvement is uncommon, and its occurrence post-bone marrow transplantation is exceptionally rare.
Observation:
- Two cases of granulocytic sarcoma in the breast following bone marrow transplantation are presented.
- Case 1: A 39-year-old woman with biphenotype acute leukemia developed a breast mass 3 years post-transplant.
- Case 2: A 48-year-old woman with acute myeloid leukemia developed bilateral breast masses 8 months post-transplant.
Findings:
- The study details the clinicopathologic features of these rare breast granulocytic sarcoma cases.
- Both patients had a history of myeloid malignancies and underwent bone marrow transplantation.
- The breast mass was diagnosed as granulocytic sarcoma in both instances.
Implications:
- These cases underscore the importance of considering granulocytic sarcoma in the differential diagnosis of breast masses in patients with a history of bone marrow transplantation.
- Further research into the mechanisms and management of extramedullary relapse in this context is warranted.
- Understanding these rare presentations can improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes.
