Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Paediatric Oncology

Background:

  • Paediatric thyroid cancer is a rare and challenging diagnosis.
  • Thyroid nodules in children and adolescents require careful investigation and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present the Scottish experience with paediatric thyroid cancer.
  • To outline the investigation and management pathway for paediatric thyroid nodules.

Main Methods:

  • Population-based data from ISD Scotland on paediatric thyroid cancer.
  • Literature review on the management and treatment of thyroid cancer in younger populations.

Main Results:

  • Incidence of paediatric thyroid cancer in Scotland is increasing annually.
  • Differentiated paediatric thyroid cancer generally has a good prognosis.
  • Outcomes for rarer pathologies like medullary thyroid cancer are more varied.

Conclusions:

  • Multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussion is essential for managing paediatric thyroid cancer.
  • Management should occur in experienced tertiary referral centers with specialized staff.
