Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence and outcomes of occupational traumatic brain injuries (TBI) requiring hospitalization in Abu Dhabi.
  • To analyze the mechanisms of injury and patient outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 581 TBI cases admitted to an Abu Dhabi hospital from 2005-2009.
  • Analysis of injury mechanisms, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) on admission, and Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) at follow-up.

Main Results:

  • 56 (10%) TBI cases were occupational, affecting exclusively male migrant workers aged 25-44.
  • Falls (63%) and falling objects (34%) were the leading causes of occupational TBI.
  • Most patients (81%) achieved good recovery, but 8% (4) died.

Conclusions:

  • Occupational TBI in the UAE is mainly caused by falls and falling objects, with significant consequences.
  • There is an urgent need for enhanced safety protocols, especially for construction workers, to prevent such injuries.
