Positron Emission Tomography01:29

Positron Emission Tomography

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique involving radiopharmaceuticals — substances that emit short-lived radiation. Although the first PET scanner was introduced in 1961, it took 15 more years before radiopharmaceuticals were combined with the technique and revolutionized its potential.
One of the main requirements of a PET scan is a positron-emitting radioisotope, which is produced in a cyclotron and then attached to a substance used by the part of the body being...

Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan

Radiological investigations are paramount in the diagnosis and management of various pulmonary diseases. Two essential investigations are the Pulmonary Angiogram and the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan.
Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...

Summary

This study showcases (18)F-FDG PET/CT imaging of a rare primary pericardial osteosarcoma in a 38-year-old woman. The scan revealed heterogeneous tracer uptake in the calcified cardiac tumor, aiding diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Imaging
  • Oncology
  • Nuclear Medicine

Background:

  • Primary pericardial osteosarcoma is an exceptionally rare cardiac tumor.
  • Accurate diagnosis and staging are crucial for patient management.

Observation:

  • A 38-year-old woman presented with an enlarged cardiac silhouette on chest radiography.
  • CT revealed an oval, calcified tumor adhered to the left posterior heart.
  • Whole-body (18)F-FDG PET/CT was performed for comprehensive evaluation.

Findings:

  • The (18)F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated heterogeneous radiotracer uptake within the calcified pericardial tumor.
  • No evidence of metastatic disease was detected on the whole-body scan.
  • Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of primary pericardial osteosarcoma.

Implications:

  • FDG PET/CT plays a vital role in evaluating rare cardiac tumors like pericardial osteosarcoma.
  • Imaging findings can guide surgical planning and assess for systemic spread.
  • This case highlights the utility of integrated PET/CT in diagnosing unusual oncological presentations.
