The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Summary

Mold contamination in temporary housing after the 1997 Oder River flood was high. Ochratoxin A (OTA) was detected in wallpaper, especially in humid conditions, but not in gypsum boards.

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Science
  • Mycology
  • Toxicology

Context:

  • Temporary housing (pavilions) constructed after the 1997 Oder River flood in South Poland became contaminated with molds.
  • These structures required evacuation due to high mold levels, posing potential health risks.

Purpose:

  • To assess mold contamination and ochratoxin A (OTA) occurrence on interior walls of flood-affected temporary housing.
  • To investigate the relationship between microclimate conditions (airflow, moisture) and mold/OTA levels in wallpaper and gypsum board materials.

Summary:

  • Various mold species were identified, with fluctuating populations regardless of experimental conditions.
  • Ochratoxin A (OTA) was consistently detected in all wallpaper samples.
  • Higher concentrations of OTA were found in pavilions with increased humidity.

  • Gypsum board walls exhibited significant mold growth but did not contain detectable levels of OTA.
  • Impact:

    • Highlights the risk of mycotoxin contamination in post-disaster temporary shelters.
    • Informs building material selection and environmental control strategies for emergency housing.
    • Underscores the importance of monitoring indoor air quality and material contamination in flood-affected areas.
