The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Area of Science:

  • Food Chemistry
  • Analytical Chemistry

Context:

  • Ochratoxin A is a significant contaminant in roasted coffee.
  • Traditional extraction methods can be time-consuming and less efficient.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE) as an alternative method for ochratoxin A determination in roasted coffee.
  • To compare ASE with the modified Koch method.

Summary:

  • ASE provides comparable results to the modified Koch method for ochratoxin A extraction.
  • ASE requires less sample preparation time and yields higher quantitative values.
  • ASE allows for the use of water as a less harmful extraction solvent.

Impact:

  • ASE presents a more efficient and potentially safer analytical approach for ochratoxin A in coffee.
  • This method can improve the accuracy and speed of mycotoxin testing in food safety.
