Therapeutic Drug Monitoring: Affecting Factors01:29

Therapeutic Drug Monitoring: Affecting Factors

Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) is the clinical practice of measuring specific drug levels in a patient's blood or body tissues to manage and optimize therapy. TDM is crucial for drugs with narrow therapeutic windows, like warfarin and phenytoin, where incorrect doses can lead to treatment failure or severe side effects. This monitoring ensures the dosage administered is within a safe and effective range. The factors affecting therapeutic drug monitoring include:Patient-Specific Factors:a.
Design Example01:23

Design Example

The innovation of touch-tone telephony revolutionized the telecommunications industry by replacing the traditional rotary dial with a dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signaling system. This system uses a matrix-style keypad with buttons arranged in four rows and three columns, creating 12 distinct signals each assigned to a pair of frequencies. Each button press results in a simultaneous generation of two sinusoidal tones – one from a low-frequency group (697 to 941 Hz) and one from a...
Sexually Transmitted Infections01:26

Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are diseases transmitted primarily through unsafe sexual interactions. Bacteria, viruses, or parasites cause them and can result in severe health complications if untreated.ChlamydiaThe bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for the disease Chlamydia, the most common STI in the United States. This peculiar pathogen requires human cells to reproduce, residing intracellularly. The initial infection often goes unnoticed because it typically does not...
Therapeutic Communication01:30

Therapeutic Communication

Communication is a lifelong learning process. Through therapeutic communication, nurses can collect relevant assessment data, provide education and counseling, and interact during nursing interventions. Sending and receiving messages occur through verbal and nonverbal communication techniques and can happen separately or simultaneously.
Verbal communication depends on language or a prescribed way of using words so that people can share information effectively. The critical aspects of verbal...

Techniques of therapeutic communication I: Active Listening, Sharing Observations, Validation, and Using Touch

The history of therapeutic communication can be traced back to Florence Nightingale, who emphasized the importance of developing trusting relationships with patients. She taught that the presence of nurses with patients results in therapeutic healing.
Therapeutic communication is not the same as social interaction. Social interaction has no goal or purpose and consists of casual information sharing, whereas therapeutic communication has a plan or purpose for the conversation. Therapeutic...
Retrovirus Life Cycles01:10

Retrovirus Life Cycles

Retroviruses have a single-stranded RNA genome that undergoes a special form of replication. Once the retrovirus has entered the host cell, an enzyme called reverse transcriptase synthesizes double-stranded DNA from the retroviral RNA genome. This DNA copy of the genome is then integrated into the host’s genome inside the nucleus via an enzyme called integrase. Consequently, the retroviral genome is transcribed into RNA whenever the host’s genome is transcribed, allowing the retrovirus to...

Summary

This study shows that a tailored text message (SMS) intervention is technically feasible for supporting HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) in managing their condition. The intervention demonstrated potential for improving medication adherence and engagement in care.

Digital Home-Monitoring of Patients after Kidney Transplantation: The MACCS Platform

Published on: April 12, 2021

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Digital Health Interventions
  • HIV/AIDS Research

Background:

  • Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS in the US.
  • Antiretroviral therapy has transformed HIV into a manageable chronic condition.
  • Short Message Service (SMS) offers a pervasive, low-cost, and convenient platform for long-term condition management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop, implement, and test a tailored SMS-based intervention for HIV-positive MSM.
  • To provide detailed technical implementation descriptions for reproducibility in future studies.
  • To offer tailored health communication messages for HIV-positive MSM via SMS.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized SMS system archives, including participant responses and messages.
  • Conducted analysis using basic descriptive statistics: frequency distributions, means, and standard deviations.
  • Focused on data relevant to the study's objective of describing intervention implementation.

Main Results:

  • Delivered 7,194 messages; received 705 SMS responses and 317 acknowledgements.
  • 92% of participants on antiretroviral therapy (ART) responded to adherence questions.
  • 27% of respondents had their adherence messages modified based on their input; generally positive perceptions reported, though response rates were low.

Conclusions:

  • Confirmed technical feasibility of a dynamically tailored, SMS-based intervention for HIV-positive MSM.
  • Highlighted the value of detailed technical descriptions for intervention replication.
  • Provided practical lessons for text programming, message delivery, and logistics in similar interventions.
