Synchronous primary lung and kidney cancer is rare but increasingly recognized in the elderly. Early detection via imaging is key for managing these distinct clinical problems.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiology
  • Clinical Medicine

Background:

  • Simultaneous primary lung and kidney cancer is infrequently diagnosed during a patient's lifetime.
  • This presentation is often asymptomatic, discovered incidentally through diagnostic imaging.

Observation:

  • Three elderly patients presented with asymptomatic primary lung and kidney cancers.
  • Pulmonary tumors were detected via chest roentgenography.
  • Renal tumors were incidentally found during CT staging for presumed lung metastasis.

Findings:

  • All three patients underwent surgical removal of both primary lung and renal tumors.
  • One patient initially received interleukin-2 for a presumed solitary pulmonary metastasis.
  • Review of autopsy series suggests this presentation is not surprising in the elderly.

Implications:

  • Increased use of chest roentgenography and CT staging will likely lead to more frequent diagnoses.
  • Synchronous lung and kidney malignancy should be considered a distinct clinical entity.
  • Management requires a tailored approach considering both primary tumors.
