Nonbacterial prostatitis (NBP) in rats did not significantly alter bladder function or inflammatory markers in the bladder. This study suggests NBP may not directly impact bladder voiding or contractility.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Inflammation Research
  • Animal Models

Background:

  • Nonbacterial prostatitis (NBP) is a common condition, but its direct impact on bladder function remains unclear.
  • Understanding NBP's effects is crucial for developing targeted therapies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of experimentally induced nonbacterial prostatitis (NBP) on bladder function in a rat model.
  • To assess changes in voiding behavior, bladder blood flow, and detrusor contractility.

Main Methods:

  • Nonbacterial prostatitis (NBP) was induced in castrated male Wistar rats using 17β-estradiol injections over 30 days.
  • Voiding behavior, bladder blood flow (BBF), prostate/bladder weight, and inflammatory cytokine levels (TNF-α, CXCL1) were measured.
  • Bladder contractile responses to electrical field stimulation (EFS), carbachol, and KCl were assessed.

Published on: April 27, 2014

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in voiding behavior (volume, frequency) or bladder blood flow (BBF) were observed between NBP and sham groups.
  • NBP induced decreased prostate weight and increased prostatic inflammatory cytokines, but did not alter bladder weight or bladder cytokine levels.
  • Bladder contractile responses to EFS, carbachol, and KCl remained unaffected in the NBP group.

Conclusions:

  • Experimental nonbacterial prostatitis (NBP) in this rat model did not lead to significant changes in bladder proinflammatory cytokine levels.
  • NBP did not significantly impair bladder function, including voiding behavior and contractility.
