Summary

Coil migration during embolization is a critical complication. The Solitaire stent, typically used for stroke treatment, was successfully employed to retrieve a dislodged embolization coil from the internal carotid artery.

Nursing responsibilities before cardiac catheterization include:Assess for allergies and establish baseline health status. Before cardiac catheterization, assess the patient for allergies to contrast dye. Perform a comprehensive baseline assessment, including vital signs, heart and breath sounds, and a neurovascular assessment of the extremities, noting distal pulses, skin color, and temperature. Instruct the patient to fast for 8-12 hours before the procedure. Evaluate baseline laboratory...

The Journal of cardiovascular surgery·2015

Area of Science:

  • Endovascular neurosurgery
  • Cerebrovascular intervention
  • Medical device innovation

Background:

  • Coil migration during embolization procedures presents an emergency requiring immediate intervention.
  • Ruptured giant aneurysms, particularly in the ophthalmic segment of the internal carotid artery (ICA), pose significant treatment challenges.

Observation:

  • A case of subarachnoid hemorrhage in a 71-year-old female due to a ruptured giant ophthalmic segment ICA aneurysm is presented.
  • During endovascular embolization, a coil migrated distally within the internal carotid artery.

Findings:

  • The dislodged coil was successfully retrieved using the self-expanding Solitaire AB stent.
  • This demonstrates the Solitaire stent's utility beyond its primary indication for mechanical thrombectomy.

Implications:

  • The Solitaire stent offers a viable and effective option for retrieving migrated coils during embolization.
  • This case highlights the adaptability of neurointerventional devices for managing unexpected complications.
