Summary

Pre-eclampsia is linked to hypothyroidism, high cholesterol, oxidative stress, and inflammation. These findings offer new insights into the complex pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine plasma levels of oxidative stress markers, thyroid hormones, nitric oxide, C-reactive protein, and nutritional profiles in pre-eclamptic patients.
  • To elucidate potential pathophysiological mechanisms underlying pre-eclampsia.

Main Methods:

  • Plasma samples from 32 pre-eclamptic women and 40 healthy controls were analyzed.
  • Measurements included total antioxidant potential (TAP), total plasma peroxides (TPP), total cholesterol (TC), total protein (TP), albumin, globulin, nitric oxide (NO), C-reactive protein (CRP), tri-iodothyronine (TT3), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).
  • Oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated as (TPP/TAP) x 100.

Main Results:

  • Pre-eclamptic patients exhibited significantly higher weight, body mass index, blood pressure, TSH, TPP, OSI, CRP, and TC compared to controls.
  • Plasma levels of TAP, NO, albumin, TP, and TT3 were significantly lower in pre-eclamptic patients.
  • No significant difference in globulin levels was observed between groups.

Conclusions:

  • Hypothyroidism, hypercholesterolemia, oxidative stress, and altered inflammatory responses are associated with pre-eclampsia.
  • These findings suggest potential targets for understanding and managing pre-eclampsia.
