Summary

A new computer-based neurovisual integrity test effectively detects neural damage, complementing visual acuity tests. This rapid, simple rarebit test shows high capability for screening neurovisual dysfunction.

  • A novel computer-based test using segmented digits composed of rarebits (briefly presented bright dots) was developed.
  • The test measures the number of rarebits read from segmented digits within an 8-second sequence.

Findings:

  • The multiple rarebit test demonstrated high capability in identifying neurovisual dysfunction.
  • Normal subjects averaged 5.6 digits read, while patients with optic nerve or visual pathway lesions averaged 3.3 digits.
  • Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis confirmed the multiple rarebit test's superior discrimination.
