Background:

  • Arterial stiffness is an emerging risk factor for cognitive decline.
  • Understanding the relationship between large artery stiffness and cognitive performance is crucial for aging populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between arterial stiffness, specifically carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (CF-PWV) and carotid-radial pulse wave velocity (CR-PWV), and cognitive function in a large cohort.

Main Methods:

  • 1433 participants (mean age 75) underwent CF-PWV and CR-PWV measurements.
  • Cognitive function was assessed using six tests covering executive function, memory, and processing speed.
  • Statistical analyses adjusted for multiple potential confounders.

Main Results:

  • Higher CF-PWV (stiffness) was significantly associated with lower scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination and Auditory Verbal Learning Test.
  • Increased CF-PWV also correlated with a lower composite cognition score and marginally with slower performance on Trail Making Test-part B.
  • No significant associations were observed between CR-PWV and cognitive measures.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated large artery stiffness, indicated by CF-PWV, is associated with impaired cognitive function in older adults.
  • Further longitudinal research is warranted to establish causality and explore potential interventions.
