Summary

This study characterizes a modulated random mirror laser, finding no frequency distortion or self-mode-locking. The laser demonstrates stable pulsed and analog modulation up to 12 GHz.

Area of Science:

  • Optics and Photonics
  • Laser Technology
  • Materials Science

Background:

  • Fiber lasers are crucial for various applications.
  • Internal modulation in fiber lasers can cause frequency distortion and self-mode-locking.
  • Random mirror lasers offer an alternative architecture.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To experimentally characterize a novel modulated random mirror laser.
  • To investigate the modulation behavior and identify potential advantages over conventional fiber lasers.
  • To assess the laser's performance under pulsed and analog modulation up to 12 GHz.

Main Methods:

  • Experimental setup for a modulated random mirror laser.
  • Measurement of modulating frequency and self-mode-locking effects.

  • Testing with pulsed and analog modulation signals up to 12 GHz.
  • Main Results:

    • The modulated random mirror laser exhibited no distortion of the modulating frequency.
    • No self-mode-locking effects were observed, unlike conventional internally modulated fiber lasers.
    • Stable laser operation was confirmed for both pulsed and analog modulation up to 12 GHz.

    Conclusions:

    • Modulated random mirror lasers provide a promising alternative to conventional fiber lasers.
    • The absence of frequency distortion and self-mode-locking enhances modulation fidelity.
    • This laser architecture is suitable for high-frequency modulation applications.
