Summary

This study shows that an integrated multimodal intervention (IMI) effectively improves speech sound production in children with severe speech disorders. The IMI combines natural speech practice with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for better results.

Background:

  • Persistent and severe speech sound disorders (SSD) pose significant challenges for young children's communication.

  • To introduce and evaluate the effectiveness of an integrated multimodal intervention (IMI) for treating persistent and severe speech sound disorders (SSD) in young children.
  • To assess the IMI's ability to enhance both the quantity and quality of speech production in children with SSD.

  • The study included 3 boys aged 4 to 8 with moderate to severe SSD who utilized speech-generating AAC devices.
