Summary

Hypomanic personality traits influence emotional processing. Individuals with higher hypomanic traits showed greater difficulty naming colors of depressive words, but not euphoria-related words, in an emotional Stroop test.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Personality Psychology

Background:

  • The Hypomanic Personality Scale (HPS) assesses traits related to hypomania.
  • Emotional processing is crucial for understanding mood disorders.
  • The emotional Stroop test is a common paradigm for assessing emotional interference.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between hypomanic personality traits and emotional interference.
  • To examine how different emotional valences (depressive vs. euphoria-related) are processed by individuals with varying levels of hypomanic traits.

Main Methods:

  • Undergraduate students were recruited and categorized based on high, medium, and low scores on the Eckblad & Chapman's Hypomanic Personality Scale.
  • Participants completed an emotional Stroop test, requiring them to name the ink color of presented emotional words.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A significant association was found between hypomanic traits and color naming interference.
  • Specifically, individuals with higher hypomanic traits exhibited greater interference when naming the color of depressive-related words.
  • No significant interference was observed for euphoria-related words.

Conclusions:

  • Hypomanic personality traits are linked to distinct patterns of emotional interference.
  • Individuals with elevated hypomanic traits may exhibit heightened sensitivity or biased processing towards negative emotional stimuli.
  • These findings contribute to understanding the cognitive underpinnings of hypomanic personality.
