Summary

Insecticide-treated mosquito nets effectively controlled malaria vectors like Anopheles anthropophagus and Anopheles sinensis. This intervention significantly reduced malaria incidence and is an economical, practical public health measure.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Entomology
  • Public Health
  • Vector-borne Disease Control

Context:

  • Malaria remains a significant global health challenge, particularly in regions with high vector populations.
  • Effective vector control strategies are crucial for reducing malaria transmission and its associated morbidity and mortality.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of deltamethrin-treated mosquito nets in controlling malaria vectors (Anopheles anthropophagus and Anopheles sinensis).
  • To assess the entomological and epidemiological impact of deltamethrin-treated nets on malaria prevalence in Yibin County, Sichuan Province.

Summary:

  • Mosquito nets were sprayed with deltamethrin (9.6mg/m²) in Yibin County, Sichuan Province.
  • Significant reductions were observed in vector population indices (Anopheles anthropophagus: 0.6, Anopheles sinensis: 1.4) and man-biting rates (97.8% and 90.8% respectively).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Residual toxicity persisted for 104 days, achieving 93.1-100% mortality for An. anthropophagus and 87.1-100% for An. sinensis. Multiparous rates dropped by 48.4-51.3%, and indoor-entering vectors decreased by 76-78.3%.
  • Impact:

    • Malaria incidence decreased by 94.4%, with a 77.5% decline in malaria positivity rates among school children.
    • Deltamethrin-treated nets proved to be an economical and practical method for effective malaria control, demonstrating significant entomological and epidemiological benefits.
