Tropicamide eye drops did not significantly alter choroidal blood flow, even with pupil dilation. This study used laser Doppler flowmetry to measure blood flow in the choroid, finding no significant changes.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Ocular Physiology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Pupil dilation is common in eye exams.
  • Understanding its effect on choroidal blood flow is crucial for interpreting ocular measurements.
  • Tropicamide is a widely used mydriatic agent.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if tropicamide-induced pupil dilation affects subfoveal choroidal blood flow.
  • To determine if any observed effects are due to a hemodynamic response to dilation.

Main Methods:

  • 18 healthy volunteers received one drop of 1% tropicamide in one eye.
  • Subfoveal choroidal blood flow (ChBF) was measured using continuous laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) for 30 minutes.
  • Measurements were taken with and without an artificial pupil to control for light entry.

Main Results:

  • Tropicamide successfully dilated pupils from 3.3 mm to 8.3 mm within approximately 24 minutes.
  • No significant changes in LDF parameters (Vel, Vol, ChBF) were observed during dilation under either condition (with or without artificial pupil).
  • The sensitivity of the method to detect changes in mean ChBF (ChBFm) was 2% (artificial pupil) and 6% (no artificial pupil).

Conclusions:

  • Tropicamide does not significantly influence subfoveal choroidal blood flow parameters as measured by continuous LDF.
  • Pupil dilation induced by tropicamide did not affect ChBFm beyond the method's detectable minimum change (6%).
