Rhesus macaque APOBEC3A restricts simian-human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) more effectively than human APOBEC3A. Specific amino acid substitutions in APOBEC3A alter lentivirus restriction capabilities.
